ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. (March 22) – You’re falling asleep in yet another boring class. As your eyes begin to close, you hear your professor say, “I don’t get my news from a cell phone. In fact, I left mine at home today and tried to make a call with my car keys.” What would you do?
If you were Joey Mullin, you would post this quote to your blog.

In honor of John Hanchette, his Introduction to Mass Media professor, the freshman journalism and mass communication major put together a blog dedicated to quotes that Hanchette has said in class.
“He’s one of the funniest people on the planet,” Mullin said.

Quotes like “Now I can get stiff at the bar and roll downhill to my house.” and “That’s the bad news, that there is a midterm. The good news is … I stole candy!” don Mullin’s blog that had 55 laugh-out-loud quotes as of March 20.
He said he began posting Hanchette’s quotes from class as his Facebook status during the 2010 fall semester. Once Mullin decided to take Hanchette for another course, he created a Tumblr blog dedicated to Hanchette’s quotes.

“There are about 50 people following the blog right now,” said Mullin of http://thehanch.tumblr.com. “I was really surprised when I received an email from Professor (Chris) Mackowski saying that alums were also following it.”
Hanchette, a 198- Pulitzer Prize winner, said he has not set out to say funny quotes.

It just happened that way.
“I don’t set out to say things that are funny and quotable, but if it helps students remember something or gets them interested in learning more then that’s great,” said Hanchette.

Mullin said he only promoted the blog by posting links on his personal blog and Facebook page. Beyond that, he said word of mouth has increased the blog’s audience.
Although most of the quotes found on the blog are posted by Mullin, he said other students have submitted their own Hanchette quotes, too.
“Submissions are always welcome and I give credit to the person who gives me the quote,” he said.
When asked whether Mullin thought Hanchette liked the idea, he said Hanchette doesn’t seem upset.

Hanchette said telling colorful stories is his way of illustrating a point to his students.

“PowerPoints are good for visual aid, but when you’re teaching an intro course you want it to be informal,” he said. “It’s the students’ first impression of college, of their major. If I can explain something in a humorous manner that gets the point across, they’ll stay interested and that’s very rewarding.”
Whether Hanchette wants the recognition or not, he said he applauds Mullin’s effort to make a blog devoted to what he says in class.
