ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. (June 20) – Unlike Michael Davenport’s buzzer-beating shot, SBU-TV Sports’ clip of the February 5 game could not beat Rochester Institute of Technology’s at the College Sports Media Award ceremony on June 7.
The College Sports Media Award is given out during the College Sports Video Summit. The third-annual summit brought together colleges, athletic departments, production and technology companies and regional and national sports networks all looking “to continue to transform the college-video industry,” said the summit’s website.
Leah Murphy, on behalf of SBU-TV Sports, attended The College Sports Video Summit, held at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel in Atlanta.
The senior journalism and mass communication major, said the conference consisted of vendors selling TV production products, a technology showcase, question and answer sessions, panelists and a networking event.
“One of the panelists, Steve Dombrowski, had some great ideas on pre- and post-game interviews,” said Murphy, talking about panelists and workshops that gave her ideas for SBU-TV Sports.
Although they did not win, Murphy said all the clips were shown and given recognition at the ceremony.
“They played about 20 seconds of all the nominees’ clips, and then announced the winner and showed their whole clip,” said Murphy, a one-year veteran of SBU-TV.

Murphy said even though the crew didn’t win, the nomination was a good start.
“This was our first time entering our work and getting nominated,” she said. “I’d say we were one of the smallest schools at the conference. So for people to see us up there getting nominated on our first try says a lot about our journalism program.”

Paul Wieland, St. Bonaventure professor of journalism and mass communication, said he’s proud of the work the crew did — and they should be pleased.
Wieland, the director of the production truck on campus, said SBU-TV has a good future ahead.
“We plan to improve our coverage in all areas this coming year, including graphics, show elements and pre-taped segments,” he said.
Win or lose, SBU-TV is gearing up for a win next year.
“No one knows how much hard work and focus goes into just one game until you’re in the truck or on the court doing talent work,” Murphy said. “Getting nominated is something, but we hope to win next year.”
