Loyalty 2: A dog's best friend

Last week, I wrote about loyalty and used, “Dogs sleeping at the foot of their masters’ beds” to exemplify this quality.

But what about a dog staying by the side of another dog that lay injured in the middle of a California highway?

Watching the morning news on CBS today, Charlie Rose reported on a viral video taken by a man who found a stray black Labrador that would not leave the side of a yellow Labrador that had been hit by a car.
Although the yellow Lab unfortunately died, the black Lab, eventually named Grace because of her actions, would not budge even as cars whizzed by and passersby stopped to help the poor dog.

The video of Grace has now had more than 800,000 views on YouTube.

Although questions over Grace’s family’s ability to care for her as they mysteriously claim her now make the headlines on this story, the lesson should not be lost – loyalty knows no bounds, or species for that matter.
Personally, I have read stories about animals, dogs especially, showing human characteristics. Whether actions of loyalty, aid or friendship throughout the years, these stories can’t help but warm your heart and crack a smile across your face.
A story like this publicized on the national news amidst war, crime and poverty reminds me that animals, as well as humans, act out of inherent goodness.
It gives me hope that although we might not always initially act out of loyalty, compassion, goodness, etc. if a serious situation were to present itself we would act from the heart.
